Champions League is back for the 2011/12 season!!! And my, what a return it has been. Goals flowing for most of the games and the intensity is absolutely at its highest quality. Have you all seen the official match ball for this season? Colourful and quite funky too. Here, have a look.
Okay, nuff said about the official match ball. Back to the real action. Last night we saw 8 games being played across europe. Here's a selective review on the games:
Barcelona 2 - 2 AC Milan: This game saw the brilliance and what Champions League is all about. Goals galore and pure football geniuses at work. Pato scored after just 24 seconds into the match and he ran straight through the heart of Barca's midfield & defence and slotted the ball between Victor Valdes's legs. Other goals scored by Pedro, David Villa (Barcelona) and Thiago Silva (AC Milan).
Next, we dive into the game between Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal. After a disastrous start to the BPL campaign, can Arsenal put their early season nightmares behind them?
Borussia Dortmund 1 - Arsenal: RvP gave Arsenal the lead but their opponents clawed back to get an equalizing goal from Ivan Perisic. It was a goal with the highest quality. A headed clearance by Kieran Gibbs was volleyed by Perisic in the 88th minute for the equalizer.
Next stop, we have Chelsea pitted against Leverkusen at Stamford Bridge which saw the former legend (NOT) Ballack made a return and almost scored. Gotta say, although Torres didn't score last night, he created 2 goals. I was impressed with his contribution for the 2nd goal especially.
Chelsea 2 - 0 Bayer Leverkusen: Bayer's keeper managed to keep Chelsea at bay in the first half with brilliant saves but it took a great run by David Luiz including his goal, to give Chelsea a winning start on the campaign. Then, another brilliant run by Torres and his set up for Mata was just enough to please their manager, Andre Villas-Boas with the result.
Finally, we head to The Dragao Stadium in Portugal for the match between FC Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk.
FC Porto 2 - 1 Shakhtar Donetsk: I advise you folks to have a look at Hulk's goal. A thunderous free kick by him pulled the scores level after Luiz Adriano fired the Ukrainians ahead. Hulk had earlier missed a penalty actually. What a way to redeem himself after missing from the spot.
Other results: Apoel Nicosia 2 - 1 Zenit St Petersburg, RC Genk 0 - 0 Valencia, Viktoria Plzen 1 - 1 BATE Borisov and Olympiakos 0 - 1 Marseille.
